Lock down

Yesterday my daughters school had a frightening incident. Luckily, the wildchild was not on campus! She was at a choir performance that they had at the hospital. It was lunch time.

Apparently, some kids decided to fight. But this was a pretty bad fight and it was at lunch time. The principal called for a lockdown. They rang the bell, 10 minutes early, and all the kids that were on campus had to go to class. They locked all the gates into the school, so anyone that was off campus couldn't go to class.

The wildchild frantically called me, to tell me that they had just arrived back on campus and there were at least 10 police cars and an ambulance on the scene. The gates were locked and nobody was around to find out what they should do. They got scared, thinking there might be a shooter on campus, so they were smart enough to realize that they should get OUT of there ASAP. She called to tell me that they were heading to our house.

I wasn't home at the time, but I was thankful that she was ok. I was heading to the little man's school, for he made the honor roll (HOORAY) and he was having an assembly. While we were at the assembly, we got a call from the high school telling us it was in a lock down.

Now, since I already knew this, and I knew the wildchild was at home, I wasn't worried. BUT, I started thinking.

What if I didn't know? What if my daughter hadn't called me. What if she was on campus? The call didn't say WHY they were on lock down. So, how were we suppose to know if our children were safe?

On the news that night, they interviewed some of the kids. I guess they were locked in the classes for 2 hours. I guess they were NOT informed as to why there was a lock down, so they didn't know what was happening. Some of the kids thought there was a shooter on campus!

Don't you think they could have at least announced that there wasn't a shooter, or that they were safe?

My daughter was not on campus, but while she was home, kids from her 5th period were calling her because they KNEW she had been on campus earlier in the day and they were worried about her. They didn't realize that she had left with the choir. She was able to tell her friends that it was about a fight. (because they scrolled it across the TV)

Anyway, I'm glad they were able to contact us, the parents, as quickly as they did. I only hope that next time they try to inform us a little bit further so they don't have frantic parents running down to the school because they think there is a shooter on campus. (Which some parents did!)

While I was at the assembly, other parents were receiving the call from the high school. Some seemed upset and weren't sure what to do. But I notice that they did get a hold of their student so they stayed for the assembly.

So, hows that for excitement?

In further news, lets go back to the whole HONOR ROLL thing. In case you missed it.

Yes, the little man is ON the HONOR ROLL!!! I am sooooo proud of him! I get to be one of those parents with the honor roll bumper sticker! Although, kudos to my sons school for giving the kids the plastic clingy thing to put on our car instead of the big sticky bumper sticker! They also honored them with a free dinner to Applebees and a free pass to the head of the lunch line, which is always good on pizza day! Of course it wouldn't be complete without the honor roll pencil and ribbon and certificate. This really was an honor for him and he was so proud of himself. Then they had the kids pass out cake and punch to all the parents in honor of them supporting their kids! How cool was that???

So, in conclusion, I would like to say, both of my kids are doing well in school! I haven't been able to say that for a very long time! But I don't know if I mentioned that the wildchild did not receive a singe D or F on her report card. Not only that, but she had to take night classes to make up for the classes she did fail over the years and she passed those too!!!! Looks like she will definitely graduate!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Oh Grace i so understand this.In september we went through the same thing at my son's high school.a text message was intercepted about bringing a gun to school. My son called me at 8 a.m.There were police,FBI,swat teams. We had to personally go in a seperate entrance and personally escort our son out.All this while they were breaking open lockers searching for weapons. My dad works for Virginia tech so you can imagine what i was thinking. Of course the school played down the incident. What a world!

  2. I am very happy that both of your children are doing so well! Especially the Wildchild she has really matured if she has been able to turn all this around. But how wonderful that both of them are doing so well.

As for the lock down. It stinks, it just stinks. I know many school still are very much against cell phones and I really understand that I am glad that Mollie and LJ can get me at anytime and can tell me what is going on wherever they are. I am glad it was not worse.

  5. Grace, I can imagine how frightening that situation must be for you, while I don't like cell phones I can see their uses.
Please explain "Honour Rolls", we don't seem to have them over here.
Apart from people who have died serving their country, that was the only honour roll we had at my school.
I glad that your two are doing well at school, that must be a big relief.
    Love and warm hugs,
    Paul.

  6. How scarey. Michael's school had a lockdown once. A fugitive was loose in the area. I know how you feel!

Congrats to being the proud parent of an honor roll student.

    Huggs

  7. Oh Grace,
How scary for all of you. It's sad how much violence our kids are exposed to. My oldest 2 were at a high-tension HS football game when fighting broke out not 2 feet from where they were -- both ended in hysterics. We knew nothing about the problems until DH went to pick them up and there were police everywhere.
And great news with the grades and the honor roll. Kudos! to your kids.
