Bossman and I bought my MIL a tea set for Christmas. It is a very nice tea set and it was the very first gift we bought, a LONG time ago.
As she opens the tea set, she pulls out one of the cups. Now the cups are on the tiny side. It's a regular size tea set and it's a pattern that she collects but I admit, the cups are kind of small. So she pulls out one of the cups first and says, "wow, this is really nice, but I don't play with dolls anymore."
~sigh~
At dinner, the MIL proudly proclaims that she has been sending money to a charity and that they send her such nice handwritten letters thanking her. This is nice, I'm thinking to myself, but I'm sure the charity doesn't have time to write everyone a handwritten note every time they donate.
But still, a nice thing for her to do. (I am still thinking to myself.)
She then ruins the entire thought by proclaiming, "well, you know, muslims* believe in giving to charity."
As opposed to....what? Christians don't?
Oh and guess how much she donates? Because I know your thinking to yourself that she must have donated quite a lot of money to receive a handwritten note...right?
$30.00.
As in thirty dollars.
~sigh~
Oh and just so you don't think I'm just picking on her, I thought you should know that the church she left (the one I still attend) has a community center that opens every Tuesday to give food and clothes to the needy.
But I forgot, we are Christians, so that doesn't count. Plus, we don't send out handwritten notes to people that donate. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that in the 60 years she went to said church, she never donated money.
~sigh~
I bought one of my nephews a Noah's Ark little people set. While playing with it with him we started naming all the animals, because that's what you do with a 2 year old. When we got to the people I didn't know Noah's wifes name. So I named her Mrs. Ark.
Fast forward to later that evening. I ask my FIL what Noah's wifes name is because he knows the Bible like the back of his hand and he is NOT muslim with my MIL. He doesn't know the answer so he gets out the Bible. He said it doesn't mention her name. Then, my MIL says, "we should look it up in the koran, for the true story of Noah is in the koran."
~sigh~
I'll get right on that. Right after I read the torah and the book of morman and what ever it is that the other religions read.
Other than that, our Christmas was great. But here are a few things I learned about muslims that I didn't know.
1. They don't believe in paying interest for things. (but me, I LOVE paying interest, the higher the better, I always say)
2. They celebrate Christmas, but they don't believe in spending a lot of money on Christmas. (I, on the other hand, spend gobs and gobs of money.)
3. They believe in giving to charity. (I don't. I'm selfish and I hoard all my money and charge people lots of interest if they borrow from me.)
As I learn new things I will share them with you. I feel it's my duty to pass along all this newfound knowledge so that we can all be better informed!
*just so you know, I am not bashing muslims. I believe the muslims have every right to worship as they please. I am only here to bash my mother-in-law. I believe it is my right to bash my MIL whenever I see fit. Plus, she makes it so damn easy. crap, now I'm probably going to burn in hell....
Grace, you're still full of grace, I'm not sure what category of sin (Muslim) MIL bashing is, it depends on the MIL. Mine was fantabulous, she was a great substitute for the one I didn't have.
ReplyDeleteHope that she doesn't get on your nerves too much, wait, hang on, if it gets you to post, perhaps I ought to encourage her. WEG!!!
Love and warm hugs,
Paul.
LOL! I love the way you write, Grace, you are so funny and it comes across so well. Oh and you can let your MIL know that even non-Christians, like Dan and me, give to the poor. Frequently. I even know flat-out atheists (*gasp*) that probably give more than we do; time and money both. Many doctors in this country are atheists and many of them do a lot of charity work, here and in other countries.
ReplyDeleteDitto on the interest thing. And I could've told your FIL that Noah's wife's name is never mentioned, btw. But I'm a huge fan of the old testament.
Which means when Jeopardy has the Bible as one of its categories, I always kick ass because they have a lot of OT answers.
I love your stories about your MIL; more more! hehehe :)
Oh God (no pun intended), Grace, I forgot that your MIL converted. She does sound like a true terror. hehehe
ReplyDeleteYo do write a great post. I love the little sighs that show up. Are we supposed to laugh? Because I was!
Happy New Year!
Debbie :)
Paul, you make me smile! I wish I had a fantabulous MIL like you!
ReplyDeleteAmber, OMG, you actually donate to charity? And your not muslim? I can't believe it! Surely it's just the muslims that keep all the charities going!!!! I guess this means you haven't read the koran??? For the koran holds ALL the answers, including the name of Noah's wife!
Debbie, Please feel free to laugh along with me. If I didn't laugh I'd end up in the loony bin. Oh wait, I think I'm already there!
HUGS!
grace
Thanks Grace. I needed a laugh today. I laughed at the way you put things, not the situation. I actually have a very hard time understanding the conversion but, don't get me started on that one. I feel for ya girlfriend. That's a hard one to deal with.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a wonderful MIL. After all mine never give me any good blog fodder. Maybe that was the reason she converted in the first place. When you guys don't have time to spank call her on the phone for a long conversation then tell us all about it!
ReplyDeleteHugs girl,
PK
Grace, this cracked me up! The part about the tea set was SO Nick's grandmother! I truly hate that you have to put up with her craziness, but you always turn it into such a great post!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Tracy
You are not going to hell...I know because if I am not you certainly are not. I don't know about this MIL....oh yes I do and you are right on the money!
ReplyDeleteYour sense of humor is what keeps me coming here. Oh yeah and the fact that I love you!
Huggs
Theresa
You could give her the coffee with a note that she owes you interest for storage! Hmmm... not paying interest.. I like that. . wonder if my mortgage bank would go for it! If so, I may have to become a Episcopal Christian Musulum

Grace this was very funny! Sounds like your MIL is a pain in any religion!
ReplyDeletewill you get handwritten note for the tea set?
